The life cycle of a single head louse is about 7-10 days for a nymph to become old enough to lay eggs. During this metamorphasus, they rely on blood from the scalp, and reside there. As an adult, they can lay 5 to 8 eggs per day but fewer as they get older. Each egg transforms into a new nymph, which grows and moults (sheds) its skin. In approximately 7-10 days becomes a new adult and the whole process starts over with EACH egg. Hypothetically, an "OUTBREAK" can become an "INFESTATION" in about 10-13 days if left untreated. ALL bedding and clothing must also be "FUMIGATED" by traditional methods, like scalding hot laundry, or segregation in plastic bags for about 3-4-days....but Naturoganics Lice Control and Preventative can make that chore easy as well. Over the Counter Treatments

Over the counter treatments available in North America (from most drug stores) include chemicals that kill head lice. They warn against leaving solutions on too long, and treating too often. It doesn't take a genious to figure out that these chemicals are harmful. Here is an example of a chemical found in an over the counter medication for pediculosis (HEAD LICE) ALSO, if you only have an outbreak, the chemical strength is not necessary, not to mention, that a re-treatment is necessary, because eggs (nits) are not affected at all, and they hatch, starting the cycle again if treatment is not repeated.

LINDANE - (FOUND in drug store remedies)

Lindane should only be used after safer medications have failed, or if safer medications caused side effects. Infrequently, lindane has caused seizures (and sometimes death) after prolonged or repeated use. Rare (possibly fatal) nervous system reactions such as seizures may even occur after correct one-time use of lindane. Lindane should not be used in premature infants or those with poorly-controlled seizure disorders. Lindane should be used with caution in infants, children, the elderly, those with other skin conditions (such as dermatitis or psoriasis), and those who weigh less than 110 pounds (50 kg) as they may be at a higher risk for side effects. Read the patient instruction sheet and Medication Guide before use, and ask your doctor or pharmacist about any information that is unclear to you. Itching may occur either after successful treatment or with treatment failures. Avoid re-applying lindane within a few months after use (consult your doctor or pharmacist for details).

After using ANY over the counter lice medication, one must change all bedding, and pillows, clothing and hats, hair grooming tools, etc, and then avoid re-treatment for a period of time to prevent harmful side effects as named above. Re-treatment is necessary almost all the time, because they DO NOT KILL NITS, and when they hatch, re-treatment will kill the lice before they lay new eggs. It's like Russian Roulette. If there are still eggs present, you must comb them out with a soecial comb, or wait till they hatch and treat again. This proves to be very costly, especially if there are numerous people to treat.
